What do I need to know when choosing childcare?
There is a wide variety of child care available in Queensland. In Queensland, most types of child care services are licensed by the Department of Families. Licensed services are required to meet minimum quality standards concerning, for example, the number of adults to children, curriculum, the physical environment, and health, hygiene and safety.
Whilst families using a licensed service can expect at least minimum standards to be met, many services strive to provide a higher level of quality child care.
You may choose to investigate a number of services before making a final decision on the one that is right for your child and your family.
Ask the child care services about:
- Daily routines for your child's age group.
- Look at the policies manual.
- Meet the person who will be caring for your child.
- Ask yourself "Do you feel confident in leaving your child at the service?"

Explanation for parents regarding fees
Fees are set by individual carers usually at an hourly rate. The amount charged per hour will be discussed at intial interview with the potential Carer. A portion of the fee charged is a Scheme levy.
Child Care Benefit
If you have permanent residency status in Australia, then the Government will subsidise your child care fees through the Child Care Benefit. The number of susidised hours is dependent on whether you (and your partner) are working, studying or training (50 hours per week) or if you need some time out for your child (24 hours per week) the amount of the subsidy is dependent on the combined income of your household (you and your partner) and this is assessed by the Family Assistance Office (FAO) - www.familyassist.gov.au or Phone: 1300 6150
Child Care Tax Rebate
Parents who receive Child Care Benefit and meet the work/study test are also eligible to apply for the 50% tax Rebate through the tax system.
